Our Approach to Treatment
Pediatric palliative care program ideally begins when you first receive the news that your child has a life-threatening condition. It can be provided along side efforts to cure or prolong life, as appropriate and desired.
Our number one focus in our pediatric palliative care is providing comfort for our patient. This is done through expert management of pain and other physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety. It is also done through emotional support services, offering the patient and family specialized counseling to help them cope with the roller coaster of emotions that can result from dealing with a serious illness or condition.
The CAPS team at HealthBridge integrates its services with the patients' primary treatment team. Our team blends palliative care with life-extending treatments in accordance with the needs and goals of the patients and families.
In our program we focus on:
- Pain and symptom management
- Care plan oversight and coordination of care across health care settings
- Family education and support
- Grief counseling and family therapy
- Developmentally appropriate services for patients and siblings
- Assistance with community resources
- Advance care planning
- End-of-life care with hospice support
On a broader scale, the CAPS team at HealthBridge is part of a collaborative network of pediatric palliative care providers, including UT Physicians, Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, and Compassionate Care Hospice, to ensure coordinated and continuous care for children with serious illness across different health care settings.
Our admissions team at HealthBridge Children’s Hospital works closely with referring hospitals to ensure that the admission process is efficient. Nurse liaisons and admission coordinators assist in our referral and admission process.
